A Brief Guide:
In July 2011 legislation will make marking to ECE104 mandatory on new trucks and trailers, and the new DfT Code of Practice for Safety at Street Works and Road Works will require rear conspicuity markings on all works vehicles, whether new or not. However, vehicle operators are strongly advised to adopt compliant marking for their vehicles now as Highways Agency contracts already require it. DfT Guidance on marking is published in Chapter 8 of the Traffic Signs Manual and failure to follow safety guidelines and best practice carries the risk of
substantial legal liability or even criminal charges should this result in a serious accident.



Fleet operators therefore need to select appropriate markings that minimise cost whilst maximising safety and reducing exposure to legal liability.

Reflective Markings - What are they?
The Department of Transport (DfT) provides guidelines for companies operating on public highways on a range of issues. Section Five refers to High Visibility Markings and entales what conspicuous markings are required on all vehicles that stop for work or inspection purposes on all public highways. From July 2011 the legislation will be law and is widely referred to as 'Chapter Eight'.

High visibility film markings must be on the rear any vehicle, working or routinely stopping on public roads and should comprise the following:
A. A solid block of flourescent orange-red retro-reflective material.
or B. Chevron markings of alternate strips of fluorescent red retro-reflective material and flourescent yellow non retro-reflective material.

Instruction for the Department of Transport states the markings should cover as much of the rear of the vehicle as possible without blocking the windows, the vehicles registration or lights.
